“Schoenberg in Hollywood” prepares for Los Angeles debut

We’re sharing a pair for great recent interviews about Tod Machover’s “Schoenberg in Hollywood” in the lead-up to the opera’s upcoming premiere in Los Angeles – an artistic homecoming for the revolutionary Viennese composer who found refuge there from World War II Europe.

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music has posted Walking that Line between Art and Entertainment, an interview with Machover about the journey that led to the creation of his opera.

In this terrific episode of BBC Sounds, “Schoenberg in the USA,” American conductor Marin Alsop explores the composer’s odyssey. She interviews Machover along with pianist Michiko Uchida, writer Alex Ross, Schoenberg’s youngest son, Larry Schoenberg, violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, and Schoenberg experts Sabine Feisst, author of ‘Schoenberg’s New World’, Leon Botstein, also a conductor, and Therese Muxeneder, of the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna.
