In the February 2022 issue of Opera News, reviewer Joshua Rosenblum is full of praise for the Boston Modern Opera Project’s new recording of “Tod Machover’s innovative, grandly imagined science-fiction opera,” with its “literate, imaginative libretto by poet Robert Pinsky.” The recording is also a Critic’s Choice. He writes, “The score bursts with both acoustic and electronic imagination in a distinctive, perpetually morphing synthesis that guides us through the complex tensions and transformations in the plot.”
The review calls out the superb performances by baritone James Maddalena in the role of Simon Powers (“magnificent”), mezzo Patricia Risley as Evvy (“spellbinding”), tenor Hal Cazalet as Nicholas (“blazing”), and Joélle Harvey as Miranda (“heartbreaking”).
