Boston events this spring

On Friday, March 8 at 7:30 pm, Tod Machover will be presenting a concert/lecture at Concord (MA) Conservatory of Music on Music & Invention. Curated to explore diverse aspects of invention in music – technological, compositional and conceptual – the program will demonstrate how different composers have changed the way we listen as well as reconsidered who creates music and how. The concert features works by some of Tod’s favorite composers including J.S. Bach, Frederic Rzewski, Liza Lim, Marianne Amacher, and Pauline Oliveros, plus three recent Machover works including the AI-enhanced “Mini’s Solo” from the recent MIT production of VALIS and the U.S. premiere of Resolve Remote for violin and electronics performed by the brilliant young UK violinist Charlie Lovell-Jones. Five MIT Media Lab graduate students are also participating in the event. Full information on the concert/lecture and tickets here.

On Wednesday, April 10, Tod will be participating in a panel discussion (7pm) and concert (8pm) at Boston Symphony Hall as part of the BSO’s “Music for the Senses” festival. Tod will be moderating a conversation with Li-Huei Tsai (MIT) and Psyche Loui (Northeastern) about the latest research into how music can treat disease, how specific frequencies may reverse degenerative illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, how innovative compositions might be created that maximize the impact of these new discoveries, and how a new field of Music Medicine is being increasingly discussed as an imminent reality by musicians, physicians, researchers, and government funding agencies. The panel will be followed by a concert that includes a performance by the Lydian Quartet of Machover’s Gammified for string quartet and electronics, a piece that embeds 40Hz “healing tones” into a dramatic, compact and cathartic musical journey. Both events are free and you can find full information here.
